Had you asked me 4 years ago what I thought about the American auto industry, I woulda flippantly tossed my hair back and hit the gas in my Civic and rolled my eyes. From my position in Los Angeles, the only really industry that mattered was Hollywood, and back then it was all about SAG strikes and writer disputes.
Fast forward to now. I live in Detroit. Both my husband and I work for an online agency where the biggest piece of business is one of the "Big Three". What do I think of the American auto industry now? I think they are screwed. Maybe it is the imports. Blame it on gas prices. Call it whatever you want. I have no idea how they got where they are, but believe me they are scared. And what I struggle with is how can any company caught in what seems like a death spiral and in a frenzy just to survive, let alone make a profit, find the space to get the clarity to find a way save themselves?
Somewhere inside of Ford, someone got some balls. And that gumption produced some of the most honest, telling advertising I have ever seen. Moving really. What I love about it is how they respect the consumer enough to say publicly, "We've lost our way." The rest of series will document how they begin to turn the company around. I can't imagine the sales job the agency had to do to get this through upper management, but kudos to the team who made this happen. I hope that it doesn't turn into a sweet journey though the Ford factories that ends with a $1000 Bonus Cash on a new Ford Explorer.
